Biography
David Rossouw was born in Johannesburg in 1959. While in Standard 2, he won an art prize, even though he had painted a red sky. David matriculated in 1977, and in 1979, he attended art classes at the Johannesburg Art Foundation, under the tutelage of Bill Ainslie and William Kentridge.
In 1981, David enrolled at the University of the Witwatersrand, and in 1984, obtained his BA (Fine Arts). Although he worked in all mediums, he majored in Graphics under Pinto Catteneo.
David travelled to the United States of America in 1985 where he exhibited at the Frement Studio in Seattle. Upon his return in 1986, he started working on a full time basis at Ditike in Venda as Product Advisor, and worked with the likes of the artists, Noria Mabasa and Jackson Hlungwani, amongst others.
Since 1989, David has been producing large-scale sculptures for corporate organizations, with architectural emphasis (most of his works over the past twelve years have been architecturally related).
David’s works can be described as functional art, and often offer architectural solutions. There is a security component in his burglar bars, gates and doors. However, his main aim is to give the ugly security bar an aesthetic look.
